Natural Treatments for Infant Eczema

In Eczema, rosacea and dry skin

Infant eczema does not start in the womb. It appears in the first six months or within the first 5 years. For children, they are likely to develop Atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and contact dermatitis. All these are itchy and lead to the development of a painful red rash.

How to Spot Eczema In:

Infants (6 months): Appears as red patches on the face, cheeks, and scalp, but it is no present on the baby’s diaper area.

Babies (1 year): Baby eczema can appear as yellow crusts and pus-filled bumps on the elbow, face, and reflex surfaces.

Toddlers (5years): Appears as dry, scaly skin on the creases of knees and elbows, arms, ankles, and wrist. It may also affect the eyes and mouth.

Children (Above 5years): Above five years, most patients will develop hand eczema. A red itchy rash behind the ears, bottom of the feet or scalp can also hint the onset of eczema.

Managing Infant Eczema

Identify triggers and use natural Moisturizers

Infants are at risk of developing eczema, especially atopic dermatitis. Eczema is not catching or contagious, and likely develops due to gene defects. Baby eczema is shown to run in families, where asthma or hay fever is present. Managing all types of eczemas involves; identifying the triggers, implementing a daily care plan, and using natural topical moisturizers.

Handling the Delicate Baby’s Skin

A baby’s skin is especially delicate, and proper care must ensue. The immune system is not yet capable of protecting their bodies from infections, and triggers can lead to the development of eczema.

Such triggers may include high temperatures, certain fabrics, chemicals in clothes and wrappings, detergents, dust, dyes in clothes, and perfumes or fragrance.

Frequent baths are not encouraged for the baby since water may remove natural oils protecting the baby’s skin. Less than three sponge baths, a week will do; using gentle, natural soaps and applying moisturizers afterward. Babies of African descent have drier skin: only one sponge bath per week is suitable.

Avoiding the use of products with chemicals is paramount. Babies have delicate skin and a sensitive immune system. Chemicals in the products may permeate through the skin causing inflammations or swelling. The child will develop an itch that results in baby eczema.
